Xunantunich Mayan Temple

Xunantunich is one of the most popular Mayan sites in the region to visit. Xunantunich translates as “Stone Woman “in Mayan. This great ancient city is located some 70 miles from Belize City. Getting there is an experience in itself because you will have to cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry. Once you get across the river, you will take a scenic ride or walk uphill to the site. Uniquely, it was built on a ridge overlooking the Mopan River and a bordering town in Guatemala.

Moreover, Xunantunich consist of six plazas and is surrounded by more than 26 temples. The tallest temple is known as “El Castillo” is located in the centre of the city and is some 130 feet tall. You can climb to the top using constructed stairways for a great panoramic view of the entire area.
